SIMPLE THINGS
Already I’m getting positive results from this asking how people are doing. It really helps my own moods. I asked Renee yesterday how she was, and she told me she was doing really good due to winning a free donut from the Tim Horton’s “Roll Up the Rim” contest. She won that on the coffee I bought her. Everything really is connected.
Heartless Bastards - “Parted Ways”
New!
Those eyes!
Hi.
I’m slow so I’m only now getting on the “hi” bandwagon. I don’t look around enough and I don’t pay attention to others much. To help improve my awareness and connection, I’m going to get in the practice of keeping my head up instead of staring at my feet and saying “hello” to as many people as I possibly can as I come across them. Through...
An older gentleman library volunteer pulled me into the back, back room housing all the donations from the community. He wanted me to take a look at some of the newest.
“Can you tell me if these history books we just got can be added to the library’s collection? I’m not sure if you’re the one to ask. It may not be your area of expertise. I know you like all the sexy...
NOTHING GOOD GETS AWAY
Followed a link to this Letters of Note from The Rumpus or The Hairpin. I forget which one. Google Reader often overwhelms. But here is a letter on love from John Steinbeck to his son. It is one of the most succinct ways of explaining love I’ve ever read.
New York November 10, 1958 Dear Thom: We had your letter this morning. I will answer it from my point of view and of course Elaine...
QUIRKS & FAULTS
Sometimes annoying, sometimes charming, quirks are those little awkward habits and behaviors that could go either way. Ultimately, they don’t hurt anybody. The good people in your life will love you and your quirks. You can recognize the presence of your quirks and embrace them for making you who you are.
Faults, on the other hand, don’t go either way. They are the big bad habits,...
A clear sign of liking somebody is a willingness to build them a blanket fort in order to impress.
"JAZZ HANDING"
Coined by Jami Sailor, this is my new favorite term Meaning should be obvious.
DAY TO DAY
At my main library gig, not many reference questions get asked. I spend most of my time on desk giving directions, looking up phone numbers and showing people what the number lock key does. I really don’t mind this because these actions still help people in some manner.
But this morning, a woman came up to me and said “Thanks for your help.” She looked familiar, but I...
WHY I LOVE LESTER BANGS →
Remember that time Collin kept talking about some rapper named Silo? Everybody was confused until I figured out he was talking about Cee Lo. That was pretty funny. Collin is super white.
Reading so much YA lit, I often think of teenage boys as articulate and kind. Then my sister’s stepson reminds me of the gross and boorish reality. He is no John Green character.
PORNPORNPORNPORNPORN
Most of my time interacting with porn at the library consists of me sneaking up soundlessly on an oblivious creepy old dude at a computer station while staring at his screen and saying loudly, “Viewing pornography is inappropriate and against library policy. You get one warning.” Then I have to write down the patron’s name and library card number in the secret red folder. I...
TWO MONTHS
No alcohol for 60 days. Holy shit. Past couple of days were a little trying, a little tempting, but overall, not too bad. Then I got the best mix CD I’ve ever gotten in the mail yesterday. Turned everything around.
If I didn’t already have a crush, I would now.
I’m just going to make a button for work that says, “Don’t ask me, I use TurboTax”.
Thanks to handmade construction paper Valentine’s cards, a ’90s emo mix cd and tons of candy, I may be liking February 14th for the first time since elementary school.
I bought a box of Airheads Valentines to send out to people. I ate them all. Sorry, you guys. Just imagine I intended mailing one to each and every one of you. You are welcome! I love you!
A young girl and possibly her boyfriend, both late teens come up to the desk. She needs help finding Lauren Oliver books and seems to like talking to me because I know Young Adult fiction.
After I assist her, her companion says to me, “Do you know who you look like?”
Thinking he’s going to say Rachel Maddow and about to be super impressed by his knowledge of impossibly...
